“Weekend Box Office Report: June 8-10”

Ocean’s 8 $41M

This is as good of an opening WB could’ve envisioned for Ocean’s 8. It’s already made more than half its budget back this weekend. Worldwide the total stands at $53M. I was thinking maybe $35M this weekend, so I’m happy to be wrong here. Ocean’s 8 was a fun heist film. The cast is stellar and you’ll be hooked watching them work through this insane job. I think we’ll be hearing about a Ocean’s 9 being green lit by the end of the month at least. It’s not a big hit yet, but I envision this movie having strong legs and making its money little by little over a couple of months. It beat every opening weekend in the Ocean’s 11 trilogy. That’s a huge moral win for WB and everyone involved in this.

Solo: A Star Wars Story $15M

Solo just crossed $312M worldwide. People aren’t interested at all and that’s a shame because Solo is a really fun film. It doesn’t capture the magic of a Star Wars film, but it’s a fun adventure with characters you know. Outside of that, it doesn’t reinvent the wheel in anyway. People are hearing that it’s a fun action movie and at the end of the day, that isn’t enough. There are fun action movies coming out every week in the summer. People are spending their entertainment dollar elsewhere.

Deadpool 2 $13.6M

Deadpool 2 is now at $655M worldwide in three weeks of release. It’s dominating the box office. It’s $133M off of what the first Deadpool made which is $783M. With Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom releasing in the coming weeks, it will be interesting to see if Deadpool 2 can pass its predecessor.

Hereditary $13M

Hereditary opened higher than any other A24 film at $13M. I was surprised by the cinemascore though. It had a D+. Films with grades less than a B usually don’t do well, that’s bad for word of mouth. People were captivated by the trailers and had to check this out. I loved this movie. It’s tense, gory, and suspenseful. Ari Aster crushes his directorial debut and Toni Collette delivered a career best performance. Hereditary is worth checking out, it’s one of the years best.

Avengers: Infinity War $7M

Infinity War has now crossed $2B worldwide officially. It needs to make around $180M more to get to the second spot all time worldwide which is held by Titanic. That maybe tough, but I can’t doubt this movies legs any longer.
