“Bluray Breakdown: March 7”

It was a slow week for blurays, but the one release that did drop was one of 2016’s best. Moana is regarded by many as the best animated film of 2016 for good reason. Lin-Manuel Miranda crafted some beautiful tunes for this visually stunning Disney musical.

The voice work here is incredible, The Rock fits Maui like a glove. His personality meshes so well with that character. Also his singing of You’re Welcome was spot on, the song itself is catchy, and hilarious. Johnson’s magnetic persona bleeds through Maui, and it gives the story so much more flare than it already had.

Auli’i Cravalho’s voice work is just as magnetic. She just draws you in. She conveys that pressure she feels of this daunting task of restoring the heart and saving her people. You feel that weight on her. She has a beautiful voice as well, when she sung How Far I’ll Go something comes over you as an audience member. I was completely glued. That song was perfect for her character’s journey, and means more as the film goes on. How you feel about that song, is the same as you do about the movie. As it goes on you can relate to it more and more, you can sympathize with the characters and the films themes.

A couple of solid features are on this release. A look inside the costume design, and how the music was made. Two of the most unique things about this film are broken down. I was personally interested in how the music was made. Having Lin-Manuel Miranda’s insight on how he constructed this music was great.

If you’re a Disney fan, owning Moana is a paramount addition to your collection. Even if you aren’t an animation fan in general, this is a fantastic musical. Moana is worthy of your collection.
