“Franchise Retrospective: John Wick”

John Wick was a pleasant surprise in 2014. Chapter 2 is coming out Friday, so I’ll talk about the original. The film that introduced us to gun-fu and the return of Keanu Reeves.

The obvious thing that makes John Wick such a fun watch is the action. Directed by David Leitch and Chad Stahelski, they keep you right there with Reeves as all these massive gun battles unfold. Some directors will shake the camera and not hold it steady, but these two really keep you in the fray, you don’t feel lost in it for a second. These gun battles are just incredible. Reeves is the perfect guy to play Wick and wields that gun like he hasn’t missed a beat.

You have to appreciate the world building in John Wick as well. Theres the hotel for assassins called The Continental. That part of the film is fascinating. The currency and how professional all the assassins are. They act like world class businessmen.

John Wick was such a joy to watch. From beginning to end its a massive action set piece. There’s the great Keanu Reeves, finally finding a role that he just amerces himself into, after all his great roles from years ago. He absolutely brings it. A throwback to 80’s action. Hopefully the sequel can live up to the original.
