“Sigourney Weaver gives her take on Neil Blomkamp’s Alien Sequel”

Alien has been in the news a lot this week. First Danny McBride talked about his character in Alien Covenant. He’s going to be the pilot of the ship of which the title gets its name. Danny McBride is a good actor. He’s more known for his comedy works. There hasn’t been much said about the rest of the characters. He’s a pilot, cool. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s just comic relief here.

Today our Queen Sigourney Weaver told us that Blomkaps untitled Alien 5 will pretty much ignore Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. She spoke to Entertainment Weekly:

“It’s just as if, you know, the path forks and one direction goes off to three and four and another direction goes off to Neill’s movie.”

I’m not surprised. This method has become quite popular in Hollywood. When we pick up a franchise later on, and there are sequels in it that are bad, it’s like they don’t exist anymore. The most recent example of this is what Bryan Singer has done with the X-Men franchise. Last Stand and Origins Wolverine were wiped from the cannon after Days of Future Past. Will Blomkamp go as deep as Singer and retcon those sequels in Alien 5, who knows. I tend to think he will just pick up after Aliens and go from there. We’ll find out in 2017.
