“The Divergent Series: Allegiant”- Review:

After the groundbreaking discoveries found in Insurgent, Four (Theo James) and Tris (Shailene Woodley) now look beyond the wall. Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort reprise their roles as the wisecracking, selfish Peter and the turncoat brother to Tris, Caleb.

I may be a bit bias having read all three books and loving them. So when I saw the first film back in 2014 I was just as amerced in the film as I was in the book. The world building and the costumes were spectacular, as was the acting. I feel the same for Insurgent. The acting was great, that cast is just perfect for their roles.

Let’s dispel this notion that just because this is the third YA franchise to come out makes it unoriginal, or awful like some critics say. If you leave all the comparisons at the door you could love these movies. Everything is similar to anything if you look hard enough. I hope Allegiant gives the fans of the franchise another film to love.

Allegiant was a lot better than it is given credit for. The sci-fi was spectacular. The landscapes and bright colors just pop right off the screen. Also Robert Schwanke did a great job with the action scenes. Fast paced, and well shot. Some steady cam and some shaky, it really worked for me.

The backbone of this series is its actors. Shailene Woodley and Theo James are just as charismatic as they have been together. If nothing else you buy that chemistry and the love they have for each other.

The supporting cast is also great. Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, and Ansel Elgort all have their moments. Teller stealing the show again with his wise cracking schtick.

Jeff Daniels as the antagonist David was a great step from Kate Winslet in the previous films. David runs the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, which is what was outside the wall that our protagonists were so desperate to escape. At times Daniels is very menacing. He really gets into Tris’s head making her question everything.

There’s nothing really I can say that rally took away from this experience. I was enthralled with the characters and the story, the two hours flew by, and the action was just top notch. Go see Allegiant.
