Box office report July 1-3:

1. Finding Dory 41.9

Well, this comes as a bit of a shock. There were 3 new releases this week including another animated film (The BFG). The hallmark of a great film is its staying power at the box office. Dory is crushing it.

2. The Legend of Tarzan 38.1
A Tarzan movie should never make such a small amount in its first week. That’s got to be a devastating number for the studio. It cost them 180 million to make. I liked the film. It isn’t without its problems but it’s still enjoyable. No one went and checked this out.

3. The Purge: Election Year 30.9
The Purge movies always do well at the box office relative to its budget. It cost Lionsgate 10 million to make and that amount was tripled opening weekend. Looks like we are going to get a Purge movie every year at this rate. Kind of like how we got a Saw every year.

4. The BFG 19.6
This has got to be a disappointment for Steven Speilberg. New animated film, in a weekend that wasn’t crowded with anything huge. Comes in fourth. Disney has to be a little upset about this
5. Independence Day Resurgence 16.5
What a Bomb. Second week, for a big budget sequel and it drops more than 50 percent. It’s made less than half of its 165 million dollar budget, but it looks like we won’t be seeing a third.
