You know how sometimes there are directors who become stars in their own right. Eli Roth, in the horror world is one of those stars behind the camera. Torture porn is his staple. With his two Hostel films and Cabin Fever, no one does torture porn better.
Green Inferno has been dwindling in development hell for years, it was originally supposed to be released 2013. Blumhouse eventually came and saved the day and allowed Eli Roth’s return to come to life. Will “The Green Inferno” give the torture porn fans what they come to expect from Roth?
Yes. This is one of the most over the top torture porn films I’ve seen. Let’s just start off with the nitpicks I have with the movie. All these characters are cookie cutter and never really flushed out all the way. You never really find yourself getting behind anyone. A movie like that doesn’t predicate itself on characters. It’s just all torture porn.
That’s where it succeeds. Roth just puts you on the edge of your seat, with your jaw dropped to the floor. In one instance a man is cut limb from limb and then eaten. Going on a college human activist trip, a group of kids are taken by a cannibalistic tribe deep in the Amazon. Seeing some of these feasts take place are just insane.
You don’t really feel the tension, but if you put yourself in the shoes of these characters, you have an OMG moment. Roth knocks this torture porn flick out of the park.
