Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens Teaser Trailer Review.
This is the definition of a good TEASER trailer. We didn’t know much about the film going into the viewing of this trailer and we still don’t.
We open on a new desert planet that isn’t Tatooine it’s called Jakku, JJ told us this at celebration on his panel. There is a crashed X Wing and Star Destroyer in the foreground which looks amazing. JJ is great at world building, we’ve seen this from him on the Star Trek films.
There is a magnificent voice over from Luke talking about the lineage of the force (my father has it, I have it, my sister has it etc.) It sounds like a redux of that same speech from Return of the Jedi, still awe inspiring non the less.
We get a shot of a melted and beat up Vader helmet. Great shot. We see some other cool shots of someone handing someone a light-saber. We assume it’s Luke to Leia.
Finally we see more from the new cast of John Boyega, Oscar Issacs, and Daisy Ridley. They play Finn, Rey, and Poe Dameron respectively. They all have some cool moments. We see Rey helping up Finn as they run from a ship that is assumed The Empire is controlling with a wide abundance of explosions going off behind them. Poe Dameron is flying an X Wing and we get a Top Gun Esc shot of him feeling really confident and yelling “woo.” Awesome stuff. At celebration Oscar Issacs told us Poe is “The best damn pilot in the galaxy.” Love it! I hope Oscars character is as cool as he is.
The we get the “money shot.” On a quick side note, every teaser trailer or regular three minute trailer needs one. Nothing spectacular has to happen. All this one shot has to do is get you more excited for the movie than you were before you saw it. The shot has to stick with you after the trailer is done. In my opinion we got that with the melted Vader helmet. At the very end of the trailer, after the millennium falcon flies through that star destroyer we hear “chewy” and after the screen comes back from black we see Han and Chewy standing together and Han says “we’re home” that’s the shot and the line that gets you ready for December. Is it Christmas yet?
