Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, and Ewan Mcgregor star in a western in which Jane (Portman) asks her Ex-lover (Edgerton) for help in protecting her criminal husband. Gavin O’Conner (Warrior) directs.
You’d think that Hollywood would just be done churning out Westerns. They don’t make a lot of money, they usually aren’t that good, and they are just boring. This is one of those boring westerns. No fault of the actors, this trio does what they can with a script that gives them little to do.
O’Conner shoots the landscapes nicely. Other then that his direction is very restrained. He doesn’t elevate the material, and other then the few great landscape shots, there isn’t anything else of note.
Is boring always a bad thing? No. It was here though. Portman tries to carry this one on her back but the material just weighs her down. This film is worth renting if you are really interested. If not, don’t bother.
