Guillermo Del Toro is back behind the camera for this latest horror, haunted house film Crimson Peak. There is a great cast at his disposal as well. Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Charlie Hunnam and Mia Wasikowska. No matter who is in his films, Del Torro usually gets great performances out of his actors, and can bring every film to life with his unique visuals. Will Crimson Peak be just that? A haunting horror film, that keeps you on the edge of your seat? Here’s hoping.
It could’ve been better. Let me start by saying Del Torro directs this movie to the point that you can’t take your eyes off it. That is the best part of this movie. It’s just stunning. Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain are great in this, they don’t have much to work with, but boy do they ever bring it. You feel like something is off about them, but you’re waiting to find out what it is, when you do you just find yourself underwhelmed.
Underwhelmed is how I feel about this film from the point of the script. Something was very bland about this “ghost story”. That it wasn’t a ghost story at all. It was a generic Shakespearian love story, that has been told a thousand times over.
Del Torro makes this movie a worth checking out. Chastain, Hiddleston, and Wasickowska are great in this as well. Their characters don’t really go anywhere and neither does this story.
